After a rough first inning, the Cinema Studies pitching and fielding came together and held off the DCC (Culture & Communication) softball team to win in the bottom of the seventh, 8-7. Cinema Studies entered the final inning trailing 7-6, but, after two singles to start the inning and a timely hits by Jeff Richarson and Neal Solon, plated the tying and winning runs. With one out, Jeff drove in Wyatt Phillips to tie the game, and Neal followed with a hit to left-center field to drive in Jeff and win the game. Manager Juan Monroy awarded Neal the game ball for his game winning, two-out hit.
Pitcher Juan struggled in the first inning failing to fool the DCC hitters, which led to their scoring seven runs before Cinema Studies came to bat. However, after outfielder Dave Wexler advised Juan to modify his pitching style, the balance shifted dramatically. DCC had opportunities, including a leadoff double in the top of the seventh, but failed to score over the next six innings.
Meanwhile, Cinema Studies methodically narrowed DCC's lead throughout the game. Cinema Studies scored three runs in the first, one in the third, two in the fourth, but couldn't plate any runs in the fifth or sixth innings. In the seventh inning and down by a run, however, Cinema Studies began their rally. Rob Levin and Wyatt both singled to start the inning, Renee Gullota grounded into a fielder's choice forcing out Rob at third and moving Wyatt to second base. Jeff singled and drove in Wyatt as the tying run and Renee to second. Pilar Rau also grounded into a fielder's choice which moved Jeff to second and forced out Renee. With two out, Neal lined a base hit to left-center field, plating Jeff and giving us the win over Culture and Communication. Faculty, take note that we have bragging rights until next spring, unless they form a outdoor soccer team in the fall, in which case, Derek, take note.
Next Sunday (May 6) is the final day of the intramural tournament. We may play more than one game next week and continue playing until we lose. If we don't lose, we're league champions. I'll pass on the schedule and any other information about next Sunday as soon as I learn it.
Thanks again to those who woke to play early this morning. I was very pleased with our playing today, and it was a true pleasure to see. And for the others, please try to come next week. This is a lot of fun. If we play multiple games, we will need as many players as possible to combat battle fatigue.
