EAST RIVER PARK. The Cinema Studies softball team, the Straayers Playaz, open our fifth consecutive season of intramural league play on Sunday, April 2, against Schnitzel, at 9:30 AM.

This year's team lost a lot of our core players due to masters graduation. Stalwarts such as third baseman Matt Hauske, infielders Matt Singer, Mike Anderson, and Pamela Kerpius, and outfielders Rob Sweeney and James Crawford have graduated.

The team's general manager, Juan Monroy, led a highly visible publicity campaign and recruited some rookies for our team. David Leng, an import from the Social Work School, will man third base. First-year MA Steve Farneth will be at shortstop this year, replacing JP Leary who is in Venezuela until June on a Fulbright fellowship. Tori Wunsch will be an important part of our roster, replacing fellow Coloradan Kerpius. Also, undergraduates Lauren Dieman and Rob Levin will be important addition to our teams. First-year MA Dan Hanamura will be serving in an all-important utility role.

Returning to the team are the all-important veterans. Outfielders Dave Wexler, Wyatt Phillips, and Derek Kane-Meddock will again be patrolling the outfield. Charley Leary and Nicole Baer will be returning to the familiar confines of the infield. Juan Monroy and Katie "Jones" Cook will be a formidable one-two punch in the pitching rotation. Adam Rubin will also bring much experience to the field.

For those interested in seeing Sunday's game, you may take the free shuttle bus from Coles that departs from Mercer and Bleecker Streets at 8:45 AM. Alternately, you may go to the northern fields, off East 10th Street and the FDR. This website contains directions to the field as well as the 2006 schedule.
